Date and Time:

Saturday, June 6, 2025, 9:00am. Training will start at 9:15am with lecture, practice, lunch (provided). Paper cartridge making and then live fire with patriot shot, reenactment drills, and cleaning. Water will be provided. If you want something else to drink or any snacks, please bring it with you.

What’s Provided:

Lunch, water, materials for patriot shot (ammo, powder, target), and cleaning supplies*. A binder which includes a reusable template for making paper cartridges, paper for blank cartridges, NRA/NMLRA Muzzleloading Guidebook, gun safety rules, training PowerPoint, SAR color guard commands, and other handouts.

Available for Purchase: round balls, flints, greased patches, reenactor powder, flash guards, frizzen cover, practice flints, flint leather, tompions, targets,

DVDs, whisk and pick set, basic flintlock tools, cleaning supplies (patches, jags, scrapers, Ballistol), gunsmithing services*.

*Please submit musket information at least two weeks prior to start of class if desiring to purchase materials. This will ensure for correct inventory on hand for all. Information needed: Make, Model, Caliber

 

 

What You Need to Bring:

Musket with flash guard and frizzen cover/hammer stall installed, see pictures below (service available if needed), powder, flint, non-alcoholic drinks, cleaning supplies, cartridge box (ideal but not required), jacket, or warm clothes (reenactment will be done rain, shine, or temperature) good attitude, and enthusiasm. There will be plenty of muskets to share so if you do not own one, please plan on attending anyway. Color guard attire is not necessary nor required

Cost of Training:

The cost of the training is to help cover the supplies and lunch. Cash or Checks made out to Hamilton Arms LLC.

Tier 1: $64, includes what is in the “What’s Provided” section

Tier 2: $49, excludes the guidebook and other NRA materials

Tier 3: $34, excludes guidebook, NRA materials, shooting and cleaning materials. Participants must bring own powder, patches, ball (for patriot shot), and various cleaning patches and fluids

Tier 4: $25, continuing ed or recertification as this does not include binder, book, paper cartridge materials, and all other materials. Includes lunch

 

BASIC MUZZLELOADING REENACTMENT

COURSE for the SAR

Course Goal: to develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a Muzzleloading flintlock musket.

Length of Course: approx. 4-6 hours. Course length may vary based on instructor/student ratio, participants skill level, and breaks needed.

Student Text: NRA-NMLRA Muzzleloading Manual (Provided for Tier 1)

Teaching Materials: PowerPoint, Instructional Videos, Hands on training, Verbal test

 

 

LESSON I: General muzzleloader knowledge and safe handling

Learning objectives:

  1. General knowledge of muzzleloading history
  2. Identification of the principal parts of flintlock muzzleloaders
  3. Understanding and application of safe handling rules for muzzleloaders
  4. Reviewing safety guidelines for INSAR color guard participation

 

 

LESSON II: Black powder (and approved substitutes) and loading

Learning objectives:

  1. Identifying black powder and approved substitutes, different granulations, and proper usage
  2. Identify, explain, and size the flint ignition system
  3. Understanding proper safety procedures with black powder, including storage and the use of a powder measure
  4. Understanding the components of a load
  5. Understanding and use of proper procedures and accessories for loading a flintlock musket

LESSON III: Making and Loading Paper Cartridges

 

Learning objectives:

  1. Identifying and making a template
  2. Understanding how to roll, tie, and fold paper cartridges
  3. Loading procedure for paper cartridges

 

 

LESSON IV: Firing and cleaning a flintlock Muzzleloading Musket

Learning objectives:

  1. Practicing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for shooting a flintlock musket safely on a range or reenactment scenario
  2. Developing safe, effective loads
  3. Failure to fire and how to safely correct it
  4. Firing a flintlock musket from the offhand position
    1. Patriot Shot: A chance to be a patriot and shoot a round-ball at a red coat target (Provided)
  5. Knowing the materials and accessories used in cleaning a muzzleloader properly
  6. Cleaning a flintlock musket safely and properly
  7. Verbal test and review safety guidelines for INSAR color guard participation

 

About the Instructor:

  • Member of the Anthony Halberstadt Chapter of the Indiana Society of the SAR – 4866 (State) – 212113 (National)
  • 15 years of muzzle-loading experience with three of those years making custom muzzle-loading firearms
  • NRA certified instructor in muzzle-loading valid through 4/30/2028 –

certificate available upon request
