If you are in Colonial attire and interact with visitors in Middletown, please remain in first person. The biggest compliment we’ve ever had is that they feel transported in time because it’s so immersive. This happens by playing to all the senses and a big part of that is addressing folks in first person. This means verbiage like ‘Good Day’ but also asking them where they hail from? Have they read the latest treatise, Common Sense? and then directing them where to to go to do so. It also means when the skits happen, feel free to come out of your shop and yell and interact along with them. Rabble rousing, interacting with the people around you… all these small interactions help build the story we are selling.
The Washingtons will be there as they are pleased another town has joined the cause. Please interact with them with the respect and joy that your ancestors would have. Invite them to try or inspect, introduce them to what you are doing or what the young patriots are up to.
As you round the sides of the Chapter House we morph into all things America 250. This does NOT require first person interpretation and it is a great place to talk with guests about how their visit to Middletown was and give them all these ways to celebrate America 250, playing games, learning about the flags, taking home a token from the bookstore or mercantile. etc. It’s an America 250 block party! #AmericasBlockParty
